Regional Pulse Crops Diagnostic Laboratory (RPCDL)

Healthy Seeds, Healthy Start!

How the Regional Pulse Crop Diagnostic Lab can support pulse growers

The Regional Pulse Crops Diagnostic Laboratory (RPCDL) at Montana State University is the only laboratory dedicated exclusively to pulse crop diagnostics, including chickpea, lentil, and field pea. We focus on supporting stakeholders with seed testing for economically important pathogens to increase pulse productivity and trade.
As a regional diagnostic lab, we provide services not only for Montana, but also for Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oregon, Washington, and other pulse regions. From Ascochyta Blight and other fungal pathogens to bacterial, viral, and nematode diseases, RPCDL offers a wide range of diagnostic services for growers.

Why Test Seeds? Before and after pulse growing season?

We are here to support you with pre-planting testing (the Ascochyta-Plus test) to identify healthy seeds and mitigate pathogen-related losses, and with post-harvest testing for export purposes (nematode testing).

Seed-transmitted pathogens can reduce pulse yield and seed quality. Planting disease-free seeds is crucial to prevent the introduction of new diseases and to prevent the propagation of existing infestations in fields. Additionally, importing countries have varying acceptable thresholds for seed-transmitted pathogens, requiring exporting countries to test their seed lots to certify that they do not exceed these thresholds or that the pathogen is absent.
“One of the main diagnostic tests requested by growers is Ascochyta-Plus, which targets multiple seedborne diseases simultaneously. By requesting this test, growers will have information on the presence of Ascochyta Blight, White Mold, Gray Mold, Anthracnose, and Stemphylium Leaf Blight on their seeds. Nematode tests are also frequently requested when growers plan to export their seeds to other countries, such as India and China”. – quote from Dr. Raissa Debacker Moura, Assistant Professor and Director of the RPCDL
